Experience
Intern - Social Computing Group, Microsoft Research - Summer 2003
-
Developed a photo sharing and
annotating applet for the next-generation OS using P2P technology and
(using) a presentation engine that was still under heavy development and
rapid change.
-
Competed in a company-wide applet
contest with many other full-time developers, demonstrated functionality of
the applet, and won the 1st prize.
Intern - Social Computing Group, Microsoft Research - Summer 2002
-
Constructed reusable UI components for document preview with adaptive and
dynamically changing layouts. (Patent pending: Horvitz, Eric I.; Cheng,
Lili; Wu, Jia-Chi. Exploded views for providing rich
regularized geometric transformations and interaction models on content for
viewing, previewing, and interacting with documents, projects, and tasks).
-
Built prototype applications for browsing and previewing of Word/PowerPoint
file contents and e-mails.
Research Assistant - University of Washington - 6/2001-1/2002, 9/2002-present
-
Actively exploring new methods for solving motor-learning problems for use
in physics-based character motion synthesis and simulation.
-
Surveying literature on physically based animations, artificial
intelligence, machine learning, and neuroscience.
-
Wrote cross-platform (Linux/Windows) 3D graphical programs in C++ and
OpenGL, implementing algorithms such as dynamic programming, reinforcement
learning, and non-linear principal components analysis.
Teaching Assistant - University of Washington - 10/2000-6/2001, 1/2002-6/2002
Assisted instructors in course administration and lectures. Met quiz sections
weekly for introductory computer programming. Graded homework and projects for
courses including graphics, software engineering, operating systems, and
algorithms.
Software Engineer - CyberLink Corp. - 1999-2000
-
Participated in production of commercial multimedia software applications.
-
Constructed a 3D facial animation
engine for web-based streaming animations.
-
Implemented a graphics rasterization
engine with 3D transition and text animation capability for the software
Medi@Show and contributed to the software's winning of the "Best of Comdex"
in the Best Utility Category at Comdex Fall '99.
Paratroops Platoon Leader - Army (Taiwan) - 1997-1999
Five jumps from airplanes and survived (with parachutes).

Bird Flight Animations, ACM Transactions on Graphics (ACM SIGGRAPH 2003).
Course Work & Projects
3D Object Scanning - 2001
-
Collaborated in implementing a 3D scanning and object reconstruction
algorithm.
-
Evaluated strengths and weaknesses of the algorithm under different scanning
setups and lighting conditions.
Rigid Body Simulation - 3/2001
Vehicle Dynamics Simulation - 1997-2000
